About this course
An introductory course on Mental Health and the Family (3 credit hours)
This course will provide an in-depth study on Mental Health specifically from a family perspective. Students will get an overview of the latest theories and methods applied by therapists in addressing various family issues, and gain understanding on how individuals and families impact each other. The instructor will incorporate Islamic principles and concepts, drawing from his own experience as a licensed marriage & family therapist. Healthy families produce healthy communities, and healthy communities produce a healthy ummah. This course will provide the foundation for providing family therapy in the future. It is excellent for anyone who is planning on working with individuals, couples, and families as a religious leader, a clinician, or for anyone who wants to know more about family relationships and their impact on mental health and wellness.
About the Instructor(s)
Ustadh Usman Mughni is a licensed family and marriage therapist and the founder of PeacefulYou Counseling. He received his MS in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northern Illinois University, and a BS in Psychology from the University of Maryland University College. He also has an Associates in Diagnostic Medical Radiography from the College of Dupage. Ustadh Usman has more than 20 years clinical and administrative experience in the healthcare field. As a therapist and counselor, he has also worked extensively with individuals, families and couples, using a pragmatic and empathetic approach in his practice. In addition, he has also developed and taught Islamic courses on family therapy that examine the latest research and theories through the lens of the Quran and Sunnah. He speaks on Islam and family issues across various platforms.
